We have installed and tested a Linux desktop alternative to Windows XP.
LindowsOS 4.0 was launched June 26 promising an even better desktop alternative than Windows XP. LindowsOS is one of many Linux distributions fighting for a part of a very tiny market. However, it is quite unique targeting only normal users at home or in small offices.
I have installed LindowsOS 4.0 on a three year old and slow computer, Compaq Presario with a Pentium 2 450MHz and 6GB hard drive, without any problems. The installation and the benchmarks were as good as or better than Windows XP. Internet browsing, playing MP3 and playing DVD/DiVX movies also worked well without any problems.
I have installed several free software packages using the Debian apt-get install command function. At a cost of 49 dollars per year, for all your computers installed with LindowsOS, you can access the even simpler software installation Click-Run at Lindows via Internet.
The most negative aspect, from my point of view, is that very few file-sharing clients work directly with LindowsOS. This will probably improve with time. In some cases you can solve the problem by using the Windows version in combination with a Windows emulator.
In conclusion, LindowsOS 4.0 is almost as good the company states for normal users. In the next step we intend to install and test some server software.
I intend to update this article with more information and links.
