It was first demonstrated October 7 at the CEATEC Japan 2003 industry show. Sales start in Japan December 13. USA and Europe will have to wait until Q1 2004 or later.
PSX was first announced by Sony May 28. It is an upgraded entertainment version of the original PlayStation 2.
According to Sony PSX will become a home entertainment center. PSX can be used for watching/recording TV using PVR-software, playing games, music, and video as well as interactive services over the Internet. Sony owns the licenses for many songs; movies etc that the company plans to distribute using PSX and similar machines.
There will be two models, PSX DESR-5000 och PSX DESR-7000, sold in Japan for around 700 dollar and 900 dollar, respectively. PSX DESR-5000 PSP will contain a built-in TV and broadcast satellite tuner, a DVD-recorder, a 160 GB disk drive, an Ethernet port, a USB 2.0 port and a Memory Stick expansion slot. The second model PSX DESR-7000 will be equipped with a 250 GB disk drive.
PSX will offer six recording modes, from HQ (high quality) to SLP (super long play). DESR-5000 will allow 33 hours recording in HQ mode and 204 in SLP mode.
PSX will be powered by a new main PS2 chip called EE+GS. At the end of the year, EE+GS will be manufactured using a 90-nanometer production line. The new chip will have 4Mbytes of memory integrated with main processor Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer. The chip will contain 53.5 million transistors on an area of 86mm2. The power consumption will be only 8 Watt compared to 37 Watt for the present two chip solution.
